Crowds are increasingly difficult to manage. What suggestions have you for controlling the behavior of a large group of people?

I do agree that crowds are difficult to manage. Especially if there is only one person handling a crowd of hundreds of people. It is difficult to get the attention of everyone when distractions are all over. It is important for the person handling the crowd, to have a loud voice, so to get the crowds’ attention whenever needed. Nonetheless, voice projection would not help if there were no variation of tone and volume. Vary of tone and volume will keep the speaking lively and grab the crowds’ attention.

Other than projection of voice, the person must also know how to get the crowds’ attention. By doing little actions or even joke while presenting, it will grab the crowds’ attention. By doing this, the crowd would not get bored and will just give his/her attention to the presenter. It would really make a difference if the presenter interacts with the audience. It is important to the success of the impact the presenter make upon audience. The presenter should also look out for the audiences’ body language and shall react to them, like mentioned earlier on; a joke would get the attention back at the presenter.

Gestures will come in handy but too much of it will irritate the audience. As each individual has preferred style of processing information, visuals will help not only get attention from the audience, it also connects the audience with the presenter. The visuals need not be perfect but it must be visible to the audience in the room. Even small and silly visual could make your presentation a memorable one.

Nonetheless, if the presenter is stern, serious and grim looking, I am sure seeking attention from the audience is not a problem to that presenter. Globalisation has made the big world shrunk with the advanced technology, which is still advancing as the clock ticks. Globalisation made factors like transportation, communications and transnational corporations (TNC) much easier between countries. The impacts of globalisation are divided into economic, social and environment.

Globalisation helped improve the standard of living in some countries and it too increased competition among nations in terms of investments and markets. As countries open doors to trade and foreign investments, they earn revenue and they make use of the revenue for education, health, defence, housing and transportation. Thus, people living in this countries benefit and get to enjoy the higher standard of living. Transnational corporations seek lower production cost and this made governments to compete to attract these corporations to invest in their countries.

With the rapid development changes in many countries nowadays, the income gap between the rich and the poor also widen. Many low skilled workers are found in the developing countries hence they are not that highly educated compared to the citizens of a developed country. Thus, they are given low-paid jobs such as factory workers. The educated and skilled ones usually have better opportunities await them. That explains the income gap.

Globalisation too change the way people live their live. Some welcome it but some oppose it. Nowadays, people are more aware of the different cultures through travelling, surfing the net of even through the media. This would not be possible without globalization. However, globalization has caused the loss of local culture. With the spread of pop culture around the world, it is said that the youths are negatively influenced and they had lost interest in the local culture.

The environmentalist believes that globalisation can be harm to the natural environment and had therefore protested against it. When TNCs set up factories all over the world, many of them use the natural resources such as timber, oil and metals at a fast rate. These resources are often found in the developing countries in abundance and at the same time, these developing countries too looking forward to gain the economic benefits. With the developing countries pay more attention to profits and markets, the natural environment in the developing countries suffer.

Forests have been cut down to make way for development of industries, housing, agriculture and transportation. This will then contribute to the extinction of natural resources and even natural disasters such as soil erosion, flooding and haze, due to the cheap clearing method of clearing forests. It also adds on to the environmental problems like global warming. The transportation of moving freely around the world and the factories emit large quantities of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide which in the end harms us even it benefits us earlier.

Thus, we need to be more concern of the condition of the earth and play our part in saving the earth, which is, after all our home sweet home.

my fav food! yummy! ;)

I love food, but again, who doesn't? There are many types of food from different cultures available in Singapore. There are from Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasians, Peranakan and many more. From all these scrumptious dishes available, I do like the Indian rojak most. I will explain further in the next few paragraphs.

Indian rojak in Singapore is an assortment of potatoes, eggs, bean curds and prawns fried in batter served with a sweet and spicy chili sauce. There are also add-ons ingredients like fish fillet, hotdogs, squid, crispy fried dough, seafood and many more. It is best eaten when it is hot because that is when you can taste the sauce and even the crispy ingredients itself. I love buying rojak form this particular stall at the Clementi market because the vendor will fry the ingredients again to make sure of its crispy-ness and freshness.

There is more than one type of rojak in Singapore. There are Indian, Malay and Chinese rojak. All the three different rojak uses different ingredients. For Chinese rojak, the sauce is a mixture of lemon drops and sweet sauce. They use fried fritters, fried bean curd, bean sprouts, pineapple, cucumber, and radish. The sauce is then poured on top of the ingredients and then sprinkled with peanut crumbs. For Malay rojak, it is known as ‘gado-gado’. Gado-gado is made of shredded green vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, green beans, watercress and bean sprouts, cucumber, carrots, tomatoes, tempeh, tofu, boiled potatoes and slice eggs.

Well the name rojak itself is interesting. According to the wikipedia (http://www.wikipedia.org), the term rojak is Malay for mixture, and used, as colloquial expression for an eclectic mix and it is often used to describe multi-ethnic society like in Singapore and Malaysia. It is also one of the many cuisines available in Singapore. It is also a must-try dish for the foreigners to get a feel of what Singapore’s foods are like and how it is linked to our peaceful society.

letter to mrs yeo

Dear Mrs. Yeo,

Many things have changed after our school, Kent Ridge Secondary School was posted a new principal. As a new principal, Mr Koh Chong Mong built on the foundation that ms. Chamb has established but still, Mr. Koh has his own preferred method. With that, I reckon Mr. Koh has tried his best to work alongside Mr. Koh Suan Lam and the other teachers to make Kent Ridge a better environment for students to study in.

For year 2008, we underwent a few changes. For a start, there is a change in the school attire. The collar pin was replaced with an iron-on school crest that is to be ironed on to the school’s blouse or shirt at the top left corner, above the school’s name. We were given two crests each and were to iron them on by 17 January. This rule was complied with because students complained that the collar pin is a hassle and a waste of money because when caught without a school badge, we are to buy it even though we may have it at home. I think this change is good as it is cheap (badge) and it solves the collar pin problem.

Other than that, we have also changed the reporting time to school on Thursday. We usually start the day at 7.30, first with assembly and then continue with lessons. However, on the second week, we started practicing the new rule which is only applicable on Thursdays. We get to report late on Thursdays at 8.30 am as the staff will have contact time. I reckon that is where they have a meeting.

As for 2008, this is the crucial year. For me, in a few months time, I’ll be taking my O level examinations. It is sure nerve wrecking even though it is a few months time but as they say, time flies. We have even started our remedials after school and it was much earlier than the previous batch, which means the o levels are really really near and we have to “chiong” which means to work extra hard to finish the syllabus and run through revision.

Enough about me, how are you doing? I really hope that you are fine and in the pink of health. Everybody here misses you. Please do come back to visit when you are free. Last but not least, I want to wish you Happy Chinese New Year. May the years to come be filled with blessings. =) Gong XI Fa Cai !

Yours truly,
Suriani , 09, 4E6

my first day of school

I can clearly recall that on the first day of school 2005, I was late. It is certainly not a wonderful thing to remember. It was my first day of school, worse still, first day in Kent Ridge too. As it was the first day, I waited for the bus that I was familiar with to school. So many buses went past me and i didn't board it. I was stubbornly waiting for 14 or 166. when the bus arrived, it was already 7.10 am. So i took the bus and was stuck at a junction on the way to Clementi. It felt hours in the bus. I kept looking at my watch wondering when i would be able to reach school and if i would be scolded. Soon after the bus began to move and i reached the interchange and waited for my second bus, 282.

Thank goodness 282 didn't take as long as 14/166. It arrived 10 minutes later. As I didn't know there was 189 available to school so I was wondering why 282 had to take the longer route? How i wished there was a direct bus from my place to Kent Ridge. I wish SBS would think of us Kent Ridgeans staying around Dover.

Finally I arrived and started walking towards school as fast as my legs could bring me. Once i reached the canal, I saw a few Kent Ridgeans so I let out a sigh of relief. At least I wont get scolded alone! I quickened my pace and was greeted my Mr. Ngoh at the foyer. I went up quickly and when i saw the hall, i was terrified. The hall was packed with students. They were all big-sized and this intimidated me. So i waited for someone to walk past me and one angel came by, Mrs. April Toh came to my rescue. I asked her where 1E4 was and she showed me. I'm gratelful to her to this day. The day continued with introduction by my english teacher and some paper work needed by the school. When it was time for recess, the councillors came to take us up to the canteen. After recess, we assembled in the hall where they student councillors took over for ice breakers and tour around the school. I enjoyed the games prepared as it was fun and really helped us to interact with one another. Soon, the last bell came earlier than i expected and it was time for us to go home. We returned to class, packed out bags and off we went. And by the first day, I made a new friend, and she is Rebecca. ;)
